Linking sustainable agriculture and organic waste management to social protection and decent work for unemployed youth, smallholder and women farmers in the savannah ecological zones of Brong Ahafo and Northern regions

RUDEYA in partnership with Cooperazione Internazionale Sud Sud (CISS) and Network for Community Planning Advocacy and Development (NECPAD) undertook a 48-month project in Ghana with funding from European Commission. The “Sustainable livelihoods” Project aims to contribute to reducing the economic, social and climate change-related vulnerability of rural communities living in Ghana savannah ecosystem region. The project outcome is the enhanced capacities of small-scale farmers to access Research, Best Practices and Innovation. The project was implemented in 5 regions in the Savannah zone in Ghana across 24 MMDAs.

The project component executed by RUDEYA strengthened the gender-sensitive, inclusive and sustainable value chains of cashew and beekeeping/honey food production .

Key Activities carried out:

  1. Training of 1000 women, youth and smallholder farmers in cashew farming and beekeeping.
  2. Training of 300 artisans including tailors, carpenters, and metal workers in how to fabricate beekeeping equipment.
  3. Training of 300 women and youth in processing of cashew nuts, honey and beeswax.
  4. Supply of beehive boxes, bee suits, bee smokers, and grafted cashew seedlings to 1000 women, youth and smallholder farmers.
